The Turkish Coastline

Turkey: a land steeped in history, where East meets West, and the sheer beauty of the landscapes can render you breathless. Whether you’re visiting Turkey for the history, culture or complete relaxation, this country has a lot to offer. What’s more, because Turkey is not part of the Euro (its currency is the Turkish lira) it can offer great value for money.

But where are the best places to visit, the hotspots of this intriguing nation? Turkey has three magnificant coastlines: the Aegean, the Lycian, and the Mediterranean – let’s take a look at each in a little more detail .

The Aegean

The Aegean boasts a number of historic sites as well as resorts geared towards the younger generation. Bodrum is one of the world’s top yachting destinations, and its peninsula boasts some secluded, exclusive resorts where quiet relaxation is the order of the day . It also benefits from thousands of years worth of history, and its crusader castle and the tomb of King Mauslolus are two sites of interest that are well worth a look. The nearby resort of Gümbet is marvellous for fine sandy beaches , as well as the lively nightlife.

Other resorts along the Aegean coastline include Kusadasi – a great surfing destination, and Izmir – Turkey’s third most populous city with 5,000 years of history and a modern edge.

The Lycian

The Lycian coastline of Turkey has a varied mix of quiet, peaceful beaches and lively, bustling resorts . If you’re looking for the former, check out Ölüdeniz which boasts one of the most photographed beaches in the world – a gorgeous lagoon bordered by fragrant pine tree-lined hills. For a more lively resort, head to nearby Fethiye, a typically Turkish town that has lots to do and see, including bazaars, boat tours and plenty of restaurants and bars to tantalise your tastebuds

For those looking for a party resort full of bars, clubs and restaurants Marmaris might be more your kind of place. The beaches of Turunç and Ìçmeler make for fun day trip excursions for those keen to enjoy some Turkish beaches.

The Mediterranean

As a favourite Turkish resort, Alanya has much to offer tourists. An old citadel sits atop the town’s magnificent mountain peak, which is flanked by two fabulous, sandy beaches. The town has an old centre, as well as the new one, where you will hear the hustle and bustle of market life along the tree lined streets .

Further down the coast, the city of Antalya really captures the heart of Turkey’s ‘East meets West’ culture. As the ‘sunniest’ part of Turkey, Antalya is a perfect winter destination as well as a summer one, boasting beaches, history and culture galore .
